Six federal holidays and a map that changes at every provincial border

Under the Canada Labour Code, federally regulated workplaces (banks, interprovincial transport, telecom) observe ten holidays including Canada Day (1 July), Victoria Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving (second Monday of October), Truth and Reconciliation Day (30 September, since 2021) and both Christmas days. Provincial Employment Standards set the real list most Canadians live by: New Year, Good Friday (Easter Monday in some regimes), Victoria Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are the near-universal core; everything else fragments.

That fragmentation is Canada's defining scheduling fact. Quebec closes the fiscal year on 24 June (Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, with the move-to-July 1 mechanics around it that shape every lease in the province — moving day nationwide). Ontario alone gets Family Day in February; Newfoundland and Nova Scotia each have their own October or August civic days; BC has Summer Day; Prince Edward Island added its own. Remembrance Day (11 November) is a statutory holiday in every province except the Atlantic ones and Manitoba, where it is a day of observance but of work. Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, a month earlier than the US — an easy and expensive mistake for cross-border planning.

Method and scope

Deducted days are national public holidays (the days the dataset records as applying to the whole country). Holidays observed only in part of the country, or only in particular sectors, are listed with “Regional or sector-specific only” and are not deducted from the business-day counts.
