Thirteen dates, two days of Christmas, and a Sunday ban that reshapes retail

Poland's holiday budget under the 1951 Public Holidays Act (as amended) gives workers thirteen national dates — at the top of the European range — including three religious May–June clusters (Constitution Day 3 May sits against Easter's wall), the Assumption on 15 August as both Marian feast and Armed Forces Day, and All Saints on 1 November, when the country spends the day at cemeteries in what is arguably its most widely observed civic ritual.

Two structural quirks matter for working-day math. First, Boxing Day (26 December) is fully protected alongside Christmas, so the end-of-year block is longer than most markets assume. Second — and bigger — since 2018 Sunday trading has been progressively banned under the Limits in Trade on Sundays Act: only a handful of excepted formats (pharmacies, stations, petrol forecourts, bakery corners) may open on most Sundays, with exceptions around pre-Christmas Advent peaks. The commercial effect of a holiday in Poland therefore lands on Monday restocking and e-commerce rather than shops, and a holiday that falls on a Sunday carries almost no extra economic impact — a fact that quietly changes which dates "cost" the economy anything.

Method and scope

Deducted days are national public holidays (the days the dataset records as applying to the whole country). Holidays observed only in part of the country, or only in particular sectors, are listed with “Regional or sector-specific only” and are not deducted from the business-day counts.
